With the events season well underway, it's great to reflect on a whirlwind few weeks of photographing people challenging themselves across various distances and disciplines, ranging from a 55 mile hike to a multi-sport quadrathlon and 100 mile cycle.
I'll post a blog about each of them over the next week or so. To kick things off The Alliance Trust Cateran Yomp, raising money for ABF The Soldiers Charity, is a particularly gruelling 55 mile hike. It leads participants north from Blairgowrie along the Cateran Trail, to Spittal of Glenshee, before looping back south through Glenisla to the finish line back at the event hub. Some choose to run, such as Ghurka and Special Forces teams, but for most it's a steady hike which upholds morale and keeps fatigue at bay as finishing times go into the early hours. One foot in front of the other for 55 miles makes this event sound straight forward, but don't be fooled. Much like those that it raises funds for The Yomp showcases an inspiring display of individuals digging deep to push their bodies well beyond the norm, and in doing so the benefits go beyond the already epic achievement of a one off fundraiser. For many participants this will be one of their first long distance adventure events but you can bet that it won't be their last, now they have got the bug! Alongside the military veterans and race snakes in the event, these participants inspire on lookers and supporters to get involved in what is an incredible fundraising achievement... I'd bet that the majority of spectators/supporters will go on to raise funds through such an event, and so the positivity goes on! As a photographer it's a busy day that is fuelled more by the energy of the event than it is by food and sugary drinks. But where would anyone be without event organisers WildFox Events to support participants with an array of waterstops and checkpoints, not to mention unique morale boosting touches such as an Elvis disco in the woods (yep, you read that right!) or a massage from the Athletes Angels.
